Project Description
The Porto-Novo Green City Project aims to enhance the attractiveness, resilience and sustainability of Benin’s capital through climate-responsive urban development. The project focuses on the revitalisation of the lagoon and waterfront areas, the regeneration of public spaces and heritage sites, and the implementation of urban initiatives designed to strengthen climate resilience, environmental protection and local economic development.

Urbaconsulting provides social and environmental advisory services to support the Project Implementation Unit (PIU) and ensure meaningful stakeholder participation throughout project implementation.
- Conducted stakeholder engagement and capacity-building activities to strengthen understanding of social, environmental and gender-related issues in the lagoon area.
- Developed and implemented a comprehensive communication and awareness-raising strategy focused on climate resilience, wetland conservation, biodiversity protection, flood risk management and sustainable waste management.
- Designed and facilitated participatory processes for the co-creation of pilot urban development projects with local communities.
- Acted as a social intermediary between public institutions, communities and project stakeholders, while integrating gender-sensitive approaches into project activities.
- Supported the implementation of Resettlement Action Plans (RAPs), including stakeholder consultation and compensation processes for affected households.
- Assisted local organisations and community groups in developing income-generating activities, particularly in sectors such as urban agriculture, fisheries and lagoon-based livelihoods.
